Annual Meeting & Volunteer Recognition Breakfast

Hanley, assistant professor and director of the graduate journalism program in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, will deliver the keynote address,"How Social Networking is Changing the Way We Do Business" at the Hamden Chamber of Commerce's 2009 Annual Meeting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th, at Cascade Fine Catering, 480 Sherman Avenue. Hanley will discuss how businesses can best use social networking sites, including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, to attract new customers and generate leads. He will give specific examples of businesses that are successfully using social networking sites to increase their revenues and others that are floundering. Hanley also will offer tips on how businesses can best measure the outcomes of their social networking campaigns.
The business community definitely has a thirst for more knowledge about how to use social networking more effectively,said Nancy Dudchik, president of the Hamden Chamber of Commerce. Professor Hanley will get business owners to start thinking about how they can best develop a social networking presence that will be beneficial to their businesses.
Hanley joined the Quinnipiac University School of Communications faculty in 2001 after a 23-year career as a journalist, including a stint at Time magazine. He is a frequent contributor of opinion pieces in national and global media and is widely sought for his comments on the news media, the internet and popular culture, appearing on national news programs on MSNBC and Fox News, including The O'Reilly Factor. He is a panelist on the weekly WNPR political discussion program titled Politics, Burgers & Beer. Hanley also is a frequent guest on national panel discussions, appearing in 2009 on C-SPAN as part of coverage of his National Press Club presentation on Journalism and Social Media.
He also serves as an official contest entry screener for the Online News Association's annual awards. He has been a judge for the National Association of Opinion Page Editors annual contest, among others. He is a six-time Emmy nominee for his television documentaries, including national PBS works such as The 1964 World's Fair and Dreams Go By,a film about the 1965 Little League World Series that earned Hanley an Associated Press award.
The event will also feature a review of the chamber's activities and accomplishments for the past year and plans for the future. Several individuals will also be recognized for their volunteer efforts.
